A new month

The first day of September. This month will always feel like the beginning of a new year to me. As I went for my morning walk today, I noticed a slight chill on my skin, and a few more leaves in their fading colours on the ground. I wondered how many feet walked these places of earth before me; the quiet, Indigenous footprints of long ago, the noisy stomp of children on family walks, the methodical ants and their tiny legs. People celebrate birthdays cheering, “Hurray! Another circle around the sun!” That’s what this is, isn’t it? Another circle around the sun. Another day to simply put one foot in front of the other. Like everyone who has gone before me, my days are filled with walking. In my best moments of walking, I take in the sights and smells, live in gratitude, and do my best to embody Goodness and Love. In my worst moments of walking, I ignore the goodness that is around me, my self-involved ugliness leaking a little into the world, doing damage. These morning walks remind me to look around, notice and be thankful. They remind me to just keep walking. Every day simply putting one foot in front of another, slowly making my way, another lap around the sun.
